If you have ever wanted to learn how to make a DIY baby tutu without sewing, I'm sharing with you a very simple tutorial on how to make one out of tulle. These are the best tips and tricks to making frilly little tutus when you have a little girl.
A tutu is one of the most adorable little pieces of apparel that you can buy for a baby girl. For good tutus, they can cost well over $80 at a high end boutique.
Today, I'm going to share with you my absolute favorite project on how to skirt around buying expensive skirts for your little girl.
While you may see a few other tutorials using different methods (like my DIY chiffon pettiskirt tutorial), this one requires little to no sewing required to make something gorgeous and frilly.
My little girls absolutely love dressing up, so I make a ton of these skirts for them. I also have friends who I make these for that I gift for their daughters as well.
Here's what my end result of this no sew baby tutu ended up looking like for my baby girl:

I have three little girls, so I know how much of a necessity it is to learn how to make a tutu, but I did not want to learn how to sew. This simple project is so easy because the baby tutu skirts themselves are so versatile. There are so many different colored tulle that you can create a different look for any occasion.

There are so many names for this project, I wanted to share with you how it is often referred to as:
- Baby tutu
- Infant tutu
- Kid tutu
- Newborn tutu
- Baby tulle skirt
- Baby tulle dress

Where kids can wear a baby tutu?
From a practicality perspective, these tulle tutus might not be great for long periods of wearing time for newborns and little babies.
The reason is because tulle (unlike chiffon) is a harder material and isn't exactly the most soft textile out there.
If you wanted to have a skirt that a baby would wear all day, a chiffon skirt might be the very best option for you (this would definitely have sewing required).
Here are some ideas on where your baby could wear a tutu:
- Newborn baby photo session
- Visiting new relatives for the first time
- Holiday parties
As you start thinking of the various colors for a tutu, I just wanted to let you know that the tulle version is one of the easiest and cheapest to make!
Various Ways of Making a Baby Tutu with
There are two ways to make this: one with ribbon and one with elastic for the waist band.
The ribbon is a lot easier to add the tulle, but the elastic makes it easier to put on baby. The choice is ultimately up to you!
This is a no sew tutu if you do the ribbon version.
If you do the elastic version - there is a small amount of stitching, but not very much at all.
Best Tips and Tricks Before Making a Baby Tutu
Create your elastic band an inch longer than the desired waist band.
Don't tie the knot too tight around the waist, or it will stretch out your elastic.
Make sure that once add the knots, fluff out and go through every layer to separate it in order to make it large and fluffy.po

Supplies Needed for a No Sew Infant Tutu
- 2 rolls of tulle
- elastic or ribbon
- thread and needle (only if using elastic)
Here are some of my handpicked supplies you'll need to make your own DIY Tutu:
Instructions on No Sew Baby and Infant Tutu
1. Gather the materials
- 2 rolls of tulle (make it extra awesome doing alternating colors)
- Elastic OR Ribbon (measure her waist first to see how much you need.
- Thread/Needle ONLY if you are doing the elastic method
The tulle can be found on sale usually at Hobby Lobby. They have sparkly tulle, multi-colored rolls, just an awesome selection. Plain colored ones are $2.99 and the sparkly ones are $4.99.

2. Measure the length of the tulle
You'll need to measure how far you want the tulle to go down your baby's leg. Then double that size. So, for my baby, I wanted it 4 inches long.
4 x 2 = 8. So I had to cut my tulle in 8 inch sections.
3. Get your ribbon or elastic ready.
If you are using elastic, cut it and sew the ends together to the size of your baby's waist. If you are using ribbon, put the ribbon around your baby's waist - then add an extra 7 inches on each end. Now, tie a knot on one side (this will be one end), wrap it around your baby's waist. Then tie a knot so that the two knots meet.
4. Begin Adding Tulle
Now, we'll begin adding tulle. Place one piece of your cut tulle around your finger in half like so:

5. Pull the Tulle Through Wrapped Around Ribbon or Elastic
Now have your elastic or ribbon ready. Put the tulle upside down behind the elastic while still holding it in half.

6. Pull Through
Now pull the tulle over the elastic / ribbon so that it ties a knot. Pull. Do this with all the tulle.
Make sure that you keep tugging and pulling them close together. The name of the game is to add enough tulle to hide the elastic / ribbon. There should be about 6 pieces of tulle for every inch of your elastic / ribbon.

7. Admire the Baby Tutu You Just Made
The final product:

P.S. I realize that this is brown material and my steps or blue material, but the picture of the materials came as an afterthought.
The final final product: here is an example of a purple one I made (with alternating tulle).

After reading this, if you are not up to the challenge of this super awesomely easy craft, I feel you 🙂 Sometimes, you just need to buy it. I've rounded a few of my favorite affordable tutus:

No Sew Baby Tutu

Learn how to make a no sew baby tutu in just a few minutes!
Materials
- 2 Rolls of Tulle
- Elastic or Ribbon
Tools
- Thread and Needle (if using elastic)
Instructions
- Gather the materials.
- Get measurements for the length of the skirt. This can be done by measuring from the waist down to the length. Take that measurement and double it.
- Cut enough tulle at that measurement.
- If using elastic, put the elastic around the waist as a measurement and add a ½ inch to the ends. Sitch these ends together.
- If using ribbon, put the ribbon around the waist as a measurement and add 7 extra inches on each end. Measure 7 inches inward from the ends of the ribbon and tie a knot. This will be the end points for the tulle.
- For a multi-colored tulle skirt, layer both ribbon colors on top of each other.
- Begin adding tulle by folding a loop and pulling down into the loop of the tulle. It should form a knot after pulling.
- Continue all the way around to the end of the ribbon or end of the elastic.
Notes
This is not recommended with chiffon. Chiffon should be sewed instead. Here is a chiffon tutu pettiskirt tutorial.
