I’ve been searching far and wide the last few weeks for the perfect grain sack pillows. I couldn’t believe how hard it was to find the “perfect” fabric. Premade pillows looked to fake. I wanted one that blended comfort with a closer to authentic grain sack pillows.

Antique grain sack fabric that is truly authentic is not only hard to find, but it is expensive. After all, grain sack has a history. The stripes of red, blue, and tan are custom stripes that are woven into hemp to be identified when grain is sent into the mill. These days, grain sacks are turned into fabrics that are used in home decor like upholstery, table runners, hand towels, and pillows.
Faux Grain Sack Fabrics
Faux grain sack fabrics allow you to get the look without the hassle of hemp falling apart. Faux grain sack fabrics are generally made from linen or cotton, and have the design pre-stamped on the fabric.
Where to Purchase and Buy Grain Sack Fabric
There are a ton of online retailers with grain sack-like fabric, but this is a grain sack seller that has some authentic bags you can use on upholstery. I also love this store for grain sack fabrics as well. Before using the textile, make sure you wash each grain sack with fabric softner to soften it during the wash. This allows it to be a little easier to work with, take care of fabric shrinkage, and just makes it a little cleaner.
You can find fabric with single stripes, double stripes, and even unused hemp rolls. Unused hemp rolls are really easy to work with.
Price of Authentic Grain Sack Fabric
Grain sack that is in good condition will normally average around $50. Larger sacks (especially ones that would be used to make body or long lumbar pillows) can go for more. If they are embroidered with a family name or emblem, they can go for a lot more depending on how intricate the design is.
