IKEA Finnala Sectional Review After a Year: Real Life With Kids, Pets, and Daily Use

Updated on Dec 30, 2025 by Seng. This post may contain affiliate links, please see our policy for details.

When we bought the IKEA Finnala sectional, it wasn't because we were bored or chasing a trend. It was because our living room setup had stopped working for our family.

We had a Pottery Barn Grand roll-arm sofa that had started to look a little frumpy over time, plus wingback chairs that looked beautiful but weren't functional. During movie nights, the kids were constantly fighting over who got the sofa and who was stuck in a chair. The wingbacks were great for sitting upright, but terrible for a family that actually likes to lounge together.

We needed more seating, more flexibility, and something that worked for real life-not just something that looked good in a catalog. After a year of living with the IKEA Finnala, here's my honest review.

Disclaimer: All photos in this post reflect real life in our home. I did not stage, clean, or reset the space before taking these pictures. We are a family of six, and this sofa is used daily by kids, pets, and guests. Any visible wear, movement, or misalignment is intentional to show what the IKEA Finnala actually looks like in a lived-in home.

Why We Chose the IKEA Finnala Sectional

The main reason we chose the Finnala was function. We wanted everyone to be able to sit together comfortably, especially for movie nights and when family comes over.

What almost stopped me from buying it were the reviews about the back cushions. I kept seeing people say they looked frumpy or didn't hold their shape well. That feedback made me hesitate-but in hindsight, those complaints were a bit overblown. Are the backs perfectly tailored at all times? No. Are they nearly as bad as some reviews make them sound? Also no.

We were also replacing wingback chairs, not just adding a sofa, so a sectional made sense. The Finnala gave us flexibility, seating, and storage without the price tag of higher-end brands.

Our Living Room Size and Layout (And Whether It Felt Too Big)

Our living room is fairly average in size, but it feels smaller because it's part of one large open space that includes the kitchen, dining area, and living room all together.

Before buying, I worried that the U- or Y-shaped sectional would overwhelm the room. And to be honest-it kind of does fill the space. The Finnala feels slightly bigger in real life than I expected.

That said, I still prefer it this way. Yes, it visually takes up more room, but it makes the space infinitely more functional. Everyone has a seat. No one is fighting for the "good spot." When guests come over, it actually works better than multiple smaller pieces ever did.

Comfort After a Year: Firmness, Lounging, and Sitting Upright

This is the most important thing to understand about the IKEA Finnala: it is a firm sofa.

If you want a super soft, sink-in, cloud-like couch, this is not the one for you. The seat cushions are still just as firm as they were on day one. The back cushions have softened slightly over time, but not dramatically.

That firmness isn't necessarily a bad thing. It makes the sofa comfortable for both lounging and sitting upright. You don't feel like you're sliding off the seat or constantly needing to readjust.

Real-life view of IKEA Finnala back cushions shifted from kids jumping and movement

Our kids regularly lounge on it, stretch out, and even sleep on it on the weekends. It's not plush, but it's comfortable and supportive.

Real-Life Use With Kids (Including the Not-So-Perfect Moments)

Our kids are between 8 and 14 years old, and they absolutely use this sofa hard. Lounging, flopping down, jumping (despite rules), and sleeping-it all happens.

One thing I want to be very honest about is that when there's a lot of movement or jumping, the back cushions can get slightly misaligned.

I'll be including a photo in this post that shows what this looks like in real life. The backing can shift a bit and look uneven after active use. That said, it's very easy to fix. You just push it back into place, and it's fine. It doesn't happen constantly, and it's never bothered me enough to regret the purchase-but I do think it's important to show and mention it honestly.

The good news is that the cushions have held their shape incredibly well. Nothing has sagged. The frame hasn't loosened. No legs have fallen off, which I honestly worried about with how much our kids use it. Overall durability has been excellent.

Fabric and Color: GUNNARED Beige After a Year

I hesitated before choosing the GUNNARED beige fabric because I've owned a white sofa before, and that did not end well.

Surprisingly, this fabric has held up extremely well. It has a subtle texture that helps hide everyday messes and wear. We don't allow eating on the sofa, but let's be real-Dorito crumbs and random snack wrappers still show up.

After a year, we have no stains. None.

We also have a cat who sheds constantly due to age, and the fabric has been easy to maintain. Fur doesn't cling excessively, and it's manageable with regular upkeep.

The overall look lands somewhere between structured and cozy, which makes it versatile. It works with traditional, mid-century modern, and more modern spaces without feeling out of place.

Ottoman Storage: Genuinely Useful, Not Just a Bonus

The ottoman storage is one of my favorite parts of this sectional. We use it to store sleeping bags and seasonal pillow covers, and it holds a lot.

One strong recommendation: buy the ottoman attached, not as a separate piece.

We have it connected on the side, and it's incredibly functional. A standalone ottoman would be much more annoying to deal with. The attached setup feels intentional and practical, especially in a family space.

    Assembly Experience: What to Expect

Assembly took us about a half day from start to finish. It's not quick, but it's manageable.

The most frustrating part was getting all the frames lined up and set correctly. Once that was done, everything else came together more easily.

Compared to higher-end brands, it's still simpler and more forgiving. Just plan the time, and don't expect it to be a one-hour project.

IKEA Finnala vs Pottery Barn: Was It a Downgrade?

I did look seriously at Pottery Barn sectionals. They are softer and more plush. But they're also more expensive, and in our experience, the back cushions required refilling fairly quickly.

With kids and daily use, I'd rather have something firm and durable than something that looks perfect but needs constant maintenance.

Did I give up a bit of brand prestige? Sure. Did I give up function or comfort? Not at all.

For families like ours, the IKEA Finnala felt like the smarter choice.

Would I Buy the IKEA Finnala Again?

    Yes-without hesitation.

If we were moving tomorrow and the room layout stayed the same, I'd buy the exact same configuration again. If the space changed, I'd still choose Finnala, just adjusted to fit the new room.

After a year of living with it, the biggest surprise has been how well it's held up. Despite kids, pets, guests, and everyday life, it still looks great and functions exactly how we need it.
