Breakfast Nook Ideas - Our Dining Nook Remodel

I'm showcasing our breakfast nook remodel in our home. We used banquette seating around our breakfast nook, and I'm sharing with you all the sources on our remodel.

After three years of accumulating breakfast nook ideas, which is really going to be our family "dining nook", we have finally actually completed this part of our home! It took us over three years to get this going, but we did it! For me, patience really was a virtue when it came down to GETTING what I REALLY wanted for the pieces in this breakfast nook.

Yes, people made fun of us for not having very FEW pieces of furniture in our home, but our goal was to accumulate what we wanted and not having to settle! What do you expect when you take a girl that lived in a SHOP for four years because her husband (boyfriend at the time) decided he wanted to live far away as humanly possible from society (story here).

When we moved into our new home, we knew that we didn't need a formal dining room. So we turned the dining room into a playroom. So what we had left was our kitchen bar and breakfast nook to have our meals. For the last three years, we have been eating our family meals at the kitchen bar. Sad but true. But, hey, we are all together - that's what counts right?

Let's take a look at what our breakfast nook looked like before I showcase our awesome space now!

Before Images of Our Breakfast Nook

Below is an image of what our house looked like for the better part of the last three years.

    breakfast nook ideas before

My beautiful table (that I had since getting my first real job) has now been demoted to a space to hold project supplies: from Ryan's painting tools, my cake stands for birthday photoshoots, the kids art work bins...you name it. And just look at my poor parson chairs...stained to pieces. Seriously. This table and the chairs have seen better days.

So, we typically ate at the kitchen island/bar. Even then, there were times when we didn't have room on our kitchen island bar. #LifeofaParent and #DIYer

This is an image of where the girls play and also eat. They have their own Pottery Barn kids table that we scored at a garage sale pristine. I won't show you what it looks like now (basically, scary). But that table and our bar stools is where they ate for the better part of the last three years. Please don't call me into Child Services.

Six months ago, we were able to score our banquette seating that I had been eyeing since we moved in. Between work and April showers, we had no time to Scotch Guard, so we got some duck cloth to cover my precious seats.

Did I mention underneath it was plastic drop cloth haphazardly duck taped together? That's protection from the stain devils living in my house. Stop laughing.

P.S. Do you see our faux wood shutters? My kids LOVED messing with them. The ones on the left actually face the neighbors and my street. Often times, I'd find them crooked and lopsided because the toddlers and the cat love to look outside. Which means no bueno on the curb appeal of my house. Ignore the weeds...we're working on that right now. Okay, you can stop laughing now.

Anyway, back to the banquette seating.

What's even cooler about this seating is the extra storage. Yeppers. Are you jelly?

    breakfast nook ideas ballard designs

Gorgeous right? Love!! Everyone thought I was insane for wanting a "couch in the dining room". But I ask every parent, what kid doesn't want to sit right next to their parents when eating? Its so awesome to just reach over and help my kids when they are needing my assistance with something!

A few weeks into my maternity leave,  I was getting into the routine of our new baby, which meant I finally found some time to be able to Scotch Guard. Yey! While I know this is not a 100% foolproof for food, its SOMETHING.

    breakfast nook ideas banquette seating

After the banquette seating, we got the Blinds.com Signature Wood Plantation Shutters installed. I have ALWAYS wanted plantation shutters. I remember going into houses while we were house shopping. Houses that had plantation shutters always stood out to me. These shutters are AMAZING. No more crooked blinds from the outside. Score!

The divider rails were a smart move on our part for sure:

We got them custom colored. We didn't 100% match the trim, and there was a reason for it.

We knew that with our house being seven years old, the trim color probably has faded. So we took the color that we identified on the 7 year old paint can and use that STANDARD color to order from. The reason why is because if we were to go touch up the trim (which we plan to within the next two years), we wouldn't have to mess with repainting the shutters to match.

Aren't they gorgeous? Check out Ryan's installation tips on YouTube (narrated by me because he wants to be off the grid) on how to install these shutters:

And finally, the moment you've been waiting for, our breakfast nook also known as dining nook also known as couch in a corner seating.

So in love with this space. Its so cozy and fun!

And when my kids are half naked running across the house, I can close the blinds on the bottom but still let sunshine into the house!

And these linen chairs...I die! They are soooo pretty! I really need my addiction to white, cream, and ivory to die. Especially with toddlers around.

And this pedestal table? Did I tell you guys that I searched ALL THE LAND to try and find an affordable version of these? Patience is definitely a virtue.

    breakfast nook pedestal table

I was going to spend about $1500 on a table that had a pedestal (yes, please roll your eyes. you spend money on clothes, my vice is furniture). The reason why I wanted a pedestal table sooo very badly was because I wanted to be able to put two chairs around it without whoever was sitting on the chair to have to worry about banging their knee. I have a whole Pinterest board dedicated to pedestal tables. Believe it. Instead, I spent about $350 (with coupons). Score!

What do you think? Hope you love it as much as I do. Do you think I'm crazy for all the white furniture I invested in for our breakfast nook / dining nook?

Follow me on Pinterest for some of the other projects I'm cooking up (hint: read my board names). I'm also planning on doing more videos, so follow me on YouTube as well!

Do you recall what size benches you purchased?! I'm trying to decide which width to get. Thanks!

I have the same obsession with neutral colors! Having 3 animals, a teen and husband being a construction worker, furniture fabrics get a real beating! But I really like your idea of using an outdoor/sunbrella fabric as an alternative kitchen upholstery. Great work coordinating the colors. Just beautiful!!!

Thanks so much Indria! That means so much to me! They have held up perfectly! I have 3 kids as well, and they are durable! Although against manufacturer recommendations, I did scotch guard. I would recommend getting a Sunbrella fabric to shield from spaghetti spills 🙂 Probably not eat spaghetti on it!

What a dreamy breakfast nook, looks like a page out of the ballard catalogue. Could you please tell me how the coventry benches and paige chairs are holding up? I have been looking at them for over 2 yr but havent taken the plunge on purchasing. I have 3 kids, so need durable furniture/fabrics. Thanks for sharing pics.
