Are you looking to revamp a space and wanting some kids playroom ideas? I'm sharing you the space in our home that we transformed into a playroom. They still use it 6 years later!

I'm sharing with you some of the tips and tricks we learned when we designed our kids playroom for our four kids.

For the last six years, it's been the most amazing space to teach our kids, let them explore their creativity, and have fun. Not only that, it allowed our house to have a space for all their toys.

These kids are definitely #blessed for all the toys they have in their life.

Choosing the Space for the Playroom and Toys

When you begin planning a playroom for your kids, the place you choose to have it is important! Choose a space that is near where the family is EVERY DAY.

Trust me on this. If you choose a space that is on a different level than where the families typically "lives", then they'll never actually play in that space.

For example, we had an office that we turned into the playroom. Of course, it's easier for them to drag toys out if it's on the same level, but that's how they'll get the most out of their new play space!

    How to Decorate Kids Playroom

When decorating a playroom for kids, you need to think in terms of zones - even for smaller spaces.

For us, we had three zones:

    • Toy Display
    • Art Area
    • Reading Nook
    • Building/Creating Space
    • Dress-up/Pretend

    Toy Display

We used Ikea Billy bookshelves to display our toys. Check out my organization section down below where I talk more about this space.

    Art Area

Kids LOVE to draw and color. You can purchase wall shelves where they can store their crayons, markers and kid-friendly scissors so that all of their art supplies have a space. Here's the cutest little storage cabinet that would be perfect if you have a big enough area for an art space!

    Reading Nook and Playroom Furniture

A reading nook is a MUST. This is going to sound bad, but whenever my kids have to be reprimanded, one of my timeouts for them is to sit in the chair in the reading nook and read OR finish crying it out. We got this cute striped, wingback chair here. Here's an adorable wingback chair with ruffles!

    Building and Creating Space

Kids LOVE to build things, so if you have stocked up on large legos, train sets, and floor puzzles, your kids are going to want some room for this! So make sure you set aside some space for this area.

    Dress-Up and Pretend

Our kids LOVE to dress up. We have a nook that we dedicate to this space to store all of their halloween costumes and career day costumes!

    Kids Playroom Organization

There are two different mindsets when it comes to toys: hide them from sight or put them in sight so they can see all their toys.

I subscribe in putting them in sight so that they can actually see all the toys they have and play with them. The downside of this is that they mxi up their toys that have pieces often, and they will lose parts of a set or pieces to a game.

However, if you hide them, it provides them the opportunity to focus on one toy at a time. However, this then doesn't give them the potential to see all the toys they have to play with.

In our space, we used Ikea Billy bookshelves that are bolted to the wall (to avoid tipping over) to showcase their toys. It also helps them when cleaning up so that they can see where to put their toys.

Here's a post that I did about playroom organization that you can check out!

Kids Toy Storage for Living Room

Our kids have toys overflowing. Trust me, as your kids get older and have birthdays, the toys will literally come busting out of the playroom.

You'll need a way rotate the toys in and out of rotation. I wrote about one of the ways I rotate toys in and out of rotation during the seasons.

    Ikea Kids Playroom Furniture

I've actually purchased the following items from Ikea for our playroom, but they never lasted. Here's why:

    Mammut Children's Table

My kids wrote all over this table, and it was really big for our space. We purchased the green one. While it was plastic and I could have just sprayed off the crayons and markers, I just thought this table took up way too much space in my area. On a positive note, it was light enough to move around (basement to playroom and back).

    Mammut Children's Stool

I do not recommend this stool, nor the cushion. The stool was used too often as a stepping stool in our house, which was not the intended use. The stool was easy enough to put together once you could bend the plastic into the hole, but I wasn't a fan. The cushion that you had to pay separately for was too puffy and always came off.

    MÅLA Easel

I've purchased two kid's easels and my kids have never played longer than 5 minutes on them. It was a one and done. Even at $20, it's totally not worth it to have in the playroom.

    Kids Playroom Rugs

A rug allows for your space to have separate areas for the zones. Here are some of my favorite rugs for a playroom:

    Kids Playroom Inspiration and Ideas

Some of the places that I draw kids playroom inspiration is not just Pinterest, but Etsy!

I wanted to do something with our walls other than paint them a bright color. When I went to etsy, I found amazing decals! These decals were pretty easy to put on and made a drastic difference in how our walls looked. This is a similar store that sells these decals!

    Decals for Kids Playroom

What we did for our kids playroom was theme each wall.

    kids playroom walls and decals

We have one wall that is a farm, another that is a jungle, another is an ocean.

Our fourth wall is comprised of a large window, so we didn't need as many decals there.

What has been amazing with these walls is that we were able to teach our kids animals! Our two year old often goes into the playroom and points out all the animals!

    Chalkboard Wall for Kids Playroom

We added a chair rail and painted the bottom portion of the walls with this chalkboard paint. We used 2 30-ounce cans of this stuff, and it was amazing!

I would recommend getting a floating wall shelf like this to store erasers and chalk for the kids. I think our kids would have used it more often if we stored the chalk near the wall.
