5 Tips for Creating a Shareable Craft Space with Kids

With the holidays coming up, the kids and I are doing crafts galore! I’ll be honest, before kids, I had my craft supplies organized beautifully. Sewing was in one space, scrapbooking was in its own area, and crocheting had its own little nook.

As my kids started growing, their little brains loved exploring their creative side. My perfectly organized stash of scissors, googly eyes, markers and adhesives were in piles!

The weekend before the start of the holidays, I got the itch to start organizing that room. Reason: I volunteered to be a troop leader for one of my girls’ scouting groups. This meant that I now had a stash of additional craft supplies that I needed to keep organized.

I stopped by Lowes to see what they had for organizing my crafting space with the goal of finding something adjustable and easy to install.

I found the Rubbermaid® FastTrack® line was the perfect fit for the craftroom. I used the Rubbermaid® FastTrack® Pantry Kit and Rubbermaid® FastTrack® Sliding WIre Drawers. They have various shelving depths available (from 12″ to 20″ deep) as well as an all steel rail and upright system that is highly adjustable.

My goal for the room was to add a section of shelving that could be adjustable. My girls are ages 4 and 5 and LOVE to use all the supplies, which poses a problem for KEEPING the space organized. Not only do I want to minimize what they can get a hold of, but I wanted to be able to let them use some of the more common supplies. In addition, I also have an 18 month old that I want to keep my supplies completely out of reach. These are pretty strict requirements.

I’m sharing tips with you today on how to create the perfect craft area that you can share with your kids while also maintaining a great scrapbooking space!

5 Tips for Creating a Shareable Craft Space with Kids

1. Measure your space and your storage requirements. Since I planned on using the Rubbermaid® FastTrack®, it was super easy for me to figure out exactly what I needed to buy. Using the Rubbermaid Storage Planner made it easy for me to design and figure out how I wanted to use the space.

2. Display all your supplies. This one is a lesson learned from previous crafting rooms for me. If you don’t display all of your supplies, then the chances of you ever using it are slim. For example, I found that I had amazing stamps stashed away only after I purchased a new set!

2. Display your kids art for inspiration. When I installed the Rubbermaid® FastTrack® Pantry Kit for the craft room, I knew I wanted to display their artwork to inspire them and myself! I leaned them up easily against the wall and shelving.

3. Stock it up with a variety of crafts. I stocked up one side of the shelves that they were not allowed to touch and dedicated one shelf that they could pull from. This helps me from answering the age old question, “Momma, can I use this?”

4. Keep it bright. Make sure your craft space has a lot of light! No explanation necessary.

5. Keep it fun! While organization is important, what’s more important is that you actually have an organization system that allows you to DO crafting! I too often get caught up in the organization that I don’t do any crafting. Don’t stress if things are out of place, just make sure you are crafting just as much as you are organizing!

I love how the Rubbermaid® FastTrack® made this craft space a little more inviting for me and the kids. I’m excited that it is adjustable and customizable! Once the kids get old enough, I’ll be adding more shelving to the bottom. Rubbermaid® also has a line for closet bedrooms called Homefree that you can also check out as well.
