I’m sharing my honest review of wearing Tieks and Toms Wedding Shoes during a 10+ day on my feet as a wedding photographer and sharing which one I prefer for both the photographer, the brides and potentially her bridesmaids!
Importance of Having Comfortable Shoes During a Wedding
I’ve been on the hunt for some fashionable, yet comfortable shoes for as a photographer during wedding season. As a wedding photographer, you’re typically on your feet A LOT, so comfortable shoes/flats are a must! They also have to look incredibly professional as well.
Since most of my summer and fall weekends are almost nearly booked with shoots this year, my feet are definitely going to need some TLC. I’m going to be on my feet – A LOT. So comfortable shoes are definitely a MUST.
My Honest Review of Toms Flats for Weddings
Last year, after hearing rave reviews about Toms, I got a pair of their black canvas classics. I must admit, I do love my Toms because they are SOO comfortable. But here’s the BUT. In my humble opinion, they do not go with any of my outfits. At all. They seriously remind me of Grandma shoes.
However, Toms do look super cute on my KIDS – pink sparkles and all. Obviously, I would never be able to pull off pink sparkles.
I often see brides running around during their wedding day with either flip flops or Toms. Those brides that are running in Toms are super smart! Some of them wear them under their wedding dress. Because I’m short, I would prefer wearing high heels so that I felt a little taller.
Overall, Toms are awesome for wedding photographers if you can pull off a more “comfy” wedding photographer look!
Favorite Toms Wedding Shoes
Toms have been a bride favorite when it comes to her big day! They truly are comfortable. Secondly, flats are typically hidden underneath the big dress! It’s also easy to slip on and off between the ceremony, photos and reception.
The white lace Toms match a bride who is wanting something that is similar to a pure white dress. The metallic burlap flats are GORGEOUS and have a sparkle in them for those that have an off white dress. The wedding wedge is absolutely stunning if you are wanting something with 3.75″ inches of height on your big day.
How I Discovered Tieks and My Opinion of Them
Then I heard people talking about ballerina flats called Tieks. The big buzz about them was the price. They were Oprah-approved flats that, on the low end, cost $175. But $175!!!
That reminded me of when I was in middle school, and the trend was for the cool kids to get Doc Martens. I remember always wanting a pair, until I realized they were $150 – and that I would never convince my parents in getting me a pair.
Anyway, I seriously needed to invest in some shoes for this wedding season that would make me look less dorky while being comfy.
The catalyst to my purchase was when I got a gift card to the Tieks online store as a part of my swag bag at Go Blog Social. It made the purchase of the matte black Tieks a little easier to swallow, but I still had to pay a hefty portion for flats.
Read my review for how to size your Tieks before you buy them! Depending on whether you get the Vegan Tieks or the classic ones, you may have to size up one full size or half a size.
Comparing Tieks and Toms for a Full Day
Breaking in Tieks versus Toms
The first day wearing Tieks, my left toe felt super tight. I thought it was my toe nail, so I cut it super short. I kept wearing them throughout the house, hoping that it would wear them in.
I never had a problem of “wearing in” Toms.
The next day, I tried wearing my Tieks during a family photoshoot in the woods for 3 hours. They were still a little tight, but more comfortable.
On the third day, I decided to wear them to my day job. They felt more worn in and more comfortable.
During lunch, I normally work out at the corporate gym. When I looked in my bag, I realized that I FORGOT MY SHOES!!
Having not worked out the last three days, I HAD to work out. So guess what? I worked out in them. True story:
I’ve never worked out in my Toms, but I have worked outdoors in our garden and landscaping. They held up great as well!
I mainly stayed on the elliptical, and I figured I’d be in horrific pain afterwards. Turned out, my feet were fine!
On the fourth day, no pain! I think this was because the shoes are made of real leather!
So, in short, give your Tieks a few days (even though you may be worried that you can’t return them after you wear them). It took me a full four days, but I grew to love them 🙂
P.S. The packaging is super pretty and awesome. Wondering if they could have knocked down the packaging so that the price was a little more reasonable. Just sayin’ Gavrieli!
Packaging of Tieks versus Toms
Update: I’ve worn Tieks on about 30 weddings (interchanged with my gold metallic ones), let me just say: my feet have thanked me! For those brides out there looking for some comfy flats you can change into in-between photos, check out my review here.
Toms has a very plain box, but remember they do give back (their 1 for 1 model)
Tieks versus Toms Wedding Shoes Summary
On the basis of just looks, I prefer going with the Tieks knowing that I would have to fully break them in before wearing them all day. Toms definitely wins hands down in terms of comfort and wearability.
Overall though, Tieks looks way better with my outfits and I will compromise on a little initial discomfort. I also talk about my other Tieks reviews here.
