Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body. – Elizabeth Stone
Teeny tiny fingers and toes. As you rock your little miracle to sleep for the first time, you’ll know these little moments are fleeting. A newborn lifestyle session will allow you to capture your little slice of heaven in a beautiful, unforgettable way in your own home.
When to Schedule a Newborn Session
It is best to schedule the newborn posed session to take place when the baby is less than 14 days old. During the first 7 days, the baby sleeps alot, and can tolerate posing / changing into different clothes without waking him/her up. This is also a time when all of the newborn characteristics are very apparent: the wrinkly skin, curled up body, and the fresh new innocent look. After 7 days, the newborn would be more aware of his/her surroundings and would not be as sleepy. After 14 days, many newborn characteristics would start to fade as newborn’s development is very fast. Thus, it is best to schedule the newborn session as early as possible. To have the first weeks of life captured would be a very valuable imagery for the parents and the baby to treasure. I suggest the newborn shoot to take place within the first 14 days of birth.
The location would be in the comfort of your home.
Time of Day
A newborn lifestyle session would take roughly 90 minutes with breaks in between. It is going to be a very relaxing session and my aim is to take as many beautiful portraits of your family and your newborn as possible. It is best to schedule the session at a time when the baby is well fed and most happy. You could also feed the baby upon my arrival or during my setup. Please try not to schedule an outing immediately following our session as the event requires to be relaxing and not rush. Please don’t hesitate to let me know when you needed a break to change diapers or feed.
What to Wear: Parents
Parents should have a black long sleeve top ready. This is required to make your hand diffuses into the black backdrop to create the classic newborn B&W portraitures when holding the baby. You may have some simple basic tees or shirts (with no text / logos, prefers white / light coloured) ready. Simplicity is best! If the mom will go into the picture, it is suggest to put on some light makeup.
Dress casual and comfortable, but keep in mind that you don’t want to wear clothes that contrast with the baby’s clothes. So if your baby is wearing light colors you should do the same; the same goes with dark colors or pastels too.
As a general rule don’t wear any stripes or patterns in the photos. They can play tricks with the camera and distract from the baby in the photos. Also, you will be in a good amount of these photos and your hands and fingernails will be shot up close too. You don’t need to go out and get a manicure, but do be aware of polish and dirt on your hands before the shoot.
What to Wear: Newborn
You may prepare the following:
- plain white basic onesies (fit sized)
- bold or solid coloured onesies / pattern onesies / rompers / jumpsuits / fitted overalls that can be easily unbutton
- for girls, cute simple dress, tops with cute lace collars, hair bows, or hats
- baby hats / tops with hoods / cute bibs / leggings
- towels / blankets to wrap around the baby (bold solid colours /patterns look best)
Here are some items you may prepare for the shoot:
- 2 baby blankets / fluffy towels in solid colours or patterns (colourful stripes / pokadots etc) that we could use to swaddle him/her around or make a background setting
As your newborn portrait photographer, I would capture all the beautiful details of your new baby. The following are some shots I will take:
- closeups of your newborn’s little hands and feet
- portraits of your newborn
- daddy holding the newborn in his arms
- mommy holding the newborn
- family portraits
What to Expect During Session
Upon my arrival, I would find the best photographing spots and the best lights and shooting photos there. Afterwards, we would find various spots to do more portraits using a combination of natural light.
What to Expect After Session
In a couple of days, I will send you around 2 photos as a quick preview and would share some on my blog. Then, we would spend roughly 2 weeks time to carefully select and post-process the photos from the session. An online private gallery will be send to you for your preview and selection for your session package prints, photos or additional order. Upon receiving your order, it would take roughly 2 weeks to have your session prints and digital images ready. For custom items such as gallery canvas, custom framing, or albums, it may take 3-8 weeks (depend on the ordered item). Feel free to check out the section ‘editing process’ for more details.
If you needed the photos ready earlier for special event (eg: printing your birth announcement cards, or sharing at full-moon party), please let me know so I can make sure we can make it happen!
This is such a special time in your family’s life, they are only little for so long. I am looking forward to meeting you and capturing these precious moments for you and your family!
