Family sessions are truly one of my favorite sessions. In every session, I capture the essence of what that family is truly about. Your son hopping on your back for a piggy back ride. Your daughter giving your husband a princess kiss. These are fleeting moments that should be captured in a beautiful way. These portraits undoubtedly will become heirlooms.
When to Schedule a Photography Session
The best time to schedule is about 6 weeks out from your session as dates book up quickly – especially for dates between August and September for those holiday cards! Baby milestones typically captured include 3 month, 6 month, 9 month and of course when they turn the ripe old age of ONE!
Typically, outdoor locations with colorful backgrounds make for the best backdrops for kids. Location ideas include Loose Park, Overland Park Arboretum, and Kauffman Gardens.
Time of Day
Assuming it’s a sunny day, it’s best to shoot either really early in the morning or late in the afternoon/evening as the sun sets. This gives the gorgeous golden lighting that I probably talk about too much. That said, don’t vary too much from your typical schedule. (Read: Never interrupt naptime!) Don’t worry if your session happens to be on an overcast day – sometimes that makes the most beautiful diffused lighting. It’s soft and doesn’t create harsh shadows. And it makes your skin looks gorgeous!
What to Wear
Stay simple. Think layers, patterns, and texture. Bring 2-3 outfit changes, and we’ll try to fit them in within the span of the portrait session (typically 90 minutes).
Don’t stress! We have plenty of time to capture amazing photos. Trust me, I take plenty, and I won’t leave until we have them. Sometimes the best photos don’t happen until 30 minutes into the session. And that’s okay because they always happen. Kids can sense tension like nobody else, and they don’t like it. Be prepared for me to photograph your kids one on one – away from the rest of the family. I seem to get the best natural shots that way.
Other Things to Consider Bringing Along
This is your chance to get creative. Think about ways to show off your baby’s personality. Are you major Mizzou or Jayhawk fans? Bring along your gear as a second wardrobe option. Do you love hiking? Bring me along on your favorite trail. Don’t forget to bring your kiddos favorites – babydolls, toys that make them giggle, even just their favorite song. These are guaranteed to help them have a good time.
As your family photographer, I would capture all the beautiful details of your family. The following are some shots I will take: family portrait, posed portraits, and candid portraits.
What Expect During the Session
Upon my arrival, I would find the best photographing spots and the best lights.
Please note that during the session, there may be several clothes change, and that we would try out various poses (thus, please expect some changing outdoors if we’re in a field).
What Expect After the Session
In a couple of days, I will send you around two photos as a quick preview and would share some on my blog. Then, we would spend roughly two weeks time to carefully select and post-process the photos from the session. An online private gallery will be send to you for your preview and selection for your session package prints, photos or additional order. Upon receiving your order, it would take roughly two weeks to have your session prints and digital images ready. For custom items such as gallery canvas, custom framing, or albums, it may take 3-8 weeks (depend on the ordered item).
If you needed the photos ready earlier for special event (eg: printing your birth announcement cards, or sharing at full-moon party), please let me know so I can see if we can fit it in earlier.
I pride myself on ensuring your portrait session will be a relaxing experience and your family will have so much fun naturally, that it will leave me to cpature those amazing moments. It is an honor and joy to meet so many families and I look forward to working with you in the future.
