I’m sharing with you some photo studio flooring ideas to get you inspired!
Today, I’m going to share with you how to easily create your own backdrop or floor drop using wall murals and decals!
After moving into our house in 2012, I tried to convince my husband for a dedicated photo studio. Our second floor is ALL carpet. Carpet is bad for photography because it is an uneven surface. Also, you can’t really interchange floor drops. Throughout the years, I’ve been trying some temporary measures until I can get the husband to agree on creating my photo studio by finishing the basement!
Before I get to the current state of the Sengerson studio, I wanted to walk through the iterations of how we got there.
Here was the first set up. It’s in Conrad’s current bedroom. We laid down paneling. After a few photo shoots, I realized that the paneling space did not give babies and toddlers enough room to roam.
Then, I decided to upgrade to a rolling system. It was a lot of work for my husband because he had to make sure the wall studs lined up to where I wanted to put the backdrops. Again, this didn’t solve my problem of babies needing to roam.
I also found out that the paneling was not the greatest way to hold floor drops.
On the opposite side, I provided another space for a backdrop so that it wouldn’t take too much time during the shoot to interchange backdrops.
When baby number three came, I had to give up the room. Luckily, outside of his door, we have a secondary living space. As it stands today, this space is now my photography studio.
To fix the dilemma of (a) saving enough money to renovate the flooring they way we REALLY want to instead of compromising and (b) a quick temporary measure for photoshoots, my husband created a 4 inch platform using 2 x 4’s and a big wood board.
It was long enough and wide enough for a baby to roam if they wanted to without having a big drop.
While it was functional, it wasn’t very pretty.
I had a few floor drops, but it never was enough to cover the entire floor.
I also didn’t want to mess with painting it at all. I wanted something that I could cover the platform that would also allow me to change it in the future if I wanted to.
Walls Need Love provided me the perfect solution. They had huge selection of wall murals and other decals that can transform any floor or wall. I picked out a White Washed Brick Wall Mural which is neutral and matches any backdrop.
Photo Studio Flooring Ideas
When you order from Walls Need Love, you’ll get all the supplies you’ll need to position it.
The sheet will come with instructions on the numbering system located on the paneling as well as how to position them.
Here’s a picture of how I positioned mine.
The numbering appears on the top right corner of each panel. I cut this strip off.
Then started peeling it slowly and flattened it as I went.
I used the included spatula the provided to make sure there weren’t any bubbles.
I made a few mistakes, which I easily was able to pick it up and reposition (unlike normal wallpaper).
After position the first few inches, the mural was going down smooth like butter.
I used the included knife to easily cut the extra pieces. (I saved the extra pieces and lined my pots and pans drawer with it!)
It came together quite nicely!
And here it is in it’s full glory! I think what I might do is create a skirt for the platform next!
I also picked up some wall decal design packs from Walls Need Love to liven up some of the backdrops I already had. Like these moustache decals!
They too are repositionable and removable. They are perfect for a little boy’s portrait shoot! They’ve got a whole host of other designs to suit your taste! I am debating on whether to add this into his bathroom as well!
Here is the floordrop and decals in action.
What, you’ve never seen a baby eat cookies before?
I then repositioned the moustaches’ to make a bigger moustache.
Don’t let this kid’s smile fool you.
He’s too freaking adorable!
I can say that about my own kid right?
I was also able to remove the decals and save them for another session since my girls also wanted to get their photos taken too!
