What better way to celebrate your kiddo’s milestone than with a stylized shoot! With a Sengerson Birthday Portrait Session, we make sure we capture your kiddo’s last days of their baby days! As an option, I can provide the cake, customized set, and props custom-designed to fit your baby’s personality!
When to Schedule A First Birthday Photography Session
The best time to schedule is about 6 weeks out from your session so that if you decide to include a birthday cake in your package, we have time to collaborate on the style of the session!
For portrait sessions where we will be soley focused on the birthday kiddo, we can do it at my home studio (especially if your little one’s birthday is during the winter). However, if your kiddo’s birthday fall during Spring, Summer, and Fall – there is also the option for an outdoor session, which is just as much fun!
Time of Day
Assuming it’s a sunny day, it’s best to shoot either really early in the morning or late in the afternoon/evening as the sun sets. This gives the gorgeous golden lighting that I probably talk about too much. That said, don’t vary too much from your typical schedule. (Read: Never interrupt naptime!) Don’t worry if your session happens to be on an overcast day – sometimes that makes the most beautiful diffused lighting. It’s soft and doesn’t create harsh shadows. And it makes your skin looks gorgeous!
If your baby has a fever or does not feel well the day of the session, it is best to reschedule. We will not get good portraits and good smiles if your baby isn’t feeling well. We will just put the cake into the freezer for safe keeping and take it out of the freezer with enough time to let it thaw prior to the next session.
What to Wear
Stay simple. Think layers, patterns, and texture. For the cake smash, some babies simply wear a diaper, bloomers, or tutu. Just be aware that clothes used in the cake smash itself will be ruined!
Don’t stress! We have plenty of time to capture amazing photos. Trust me, I take plenty, and I won’t leave until we have them. Sometimes the best photos don’t happen until 30 minutes into the session. And that’s okay because they always happen. Kids can sense tension like nobody else, and they don’t like it. Be prepared for me to photograph your kids one on one – away from the rest of the family. I seem to get the best natural shots that way. No offense, Moms!
The client is responsible for ordering and providing the cake and cake stand! Please avoid ordering chocolate cake and please avoid fondant decorations (this can pose as a choking hazard).
If you prefer to provide a home-baked cake yourself instead of from the bakery, please make sure that no toothpicks or other structural items are placed inside the cake. Also for home-baked cakes, please avoid lining the base plate with tin foil.
Other Things to Consider Bringing Along
Props: This is your chance to get creative. Think about ways to show off your baby’s personality. Are you major Mizzou or Jayhawk fans? Bring along your gear as a second wardrobe option. Do you love hiking? Bring me along on your favorite trail. Don’t forget to bring your kiddos favorites – babydolls, toys that make them giggle, even just their favorite song. These are guaranteed to help them have a good time.
Other Food: Have some Cheerios, puffs or your baby’s favorite dry finger food on hand to stuff into the cake in case they need help being a little more interested in it. Also have a sippy cup within arms reach in case your baby gets thirsty. Your baby will need a little break from the fun!
As your family photographer, I would capture all the fun and spunk of your one year old! Trust that I will capture both posed and candid photos of your little!
What Expect During the Session
Upon my arrival, I would find the best photographing spots and the best lights.
Please note that during the session, there may be several clothes change, and that we would try out various poses (thus, please expect some changing outdoors if we’re in a field).
What Expect After the Session
In a couple of days, I will send you around two photos as a quick preview and would share some on my blog. Then, we would spend roughly two weeks time to carefully select and post-process the photos from the session. An online private gallery will be send to you for your preview and selection for your session package prints, photos or additional order. Upon receiving your order, it would take roughly two weeks to have your session prints and digital images ready. For custom items such as gallery canvas, custom framing, or albums, it may take 3-8 weeks (depend on the ordered item).
If you needed the photos ready earlier for special event (eg: printing your birth announcement cards, or sharing at full-moon party), please let me know so I can see if we can fit it in earlier.
This is such a big milestone for your little! I look forward to capturing a fun and memorable session for your family. It is an honor and privilege to capture these memories for you that you will treasure for years to come!
