Today, I’m going to walk you through why authentic grain sack pillows are so expensive (hint: it’s old), and some affordable alternatives for farmhouse style grain sack pillows for fall!
The History of Grain Sack Fabric
Farmhouse style interior decorators are drawn to these fabrics because they have a beautiful, natural texture. Most often, decorators use it for pillows, but you’ll see it used in upholstery (think deconstructed chairs) and table runners.
Authentic vintage grain sacks are limited in supply. They originated in late 1800s when farmers needed to transport their grain to the market for milling. Often, farmers wove a pattern or stripe on the sack along with their initials to identify their sacks from other farmers.
Popularity of Grain Sack Pillows
With the show Fixer Upper and the trend of the cozy, neutral farmhouse decor rising, the demand for authentic grain sack pillows have risen. Other decorating styles that increase the demand for grain sack are farmhouse, french country, boho, shabby chic, and french country.
With a limited supply due to this increasing demand, you’ll find yourself paying a pretty penny to purchase these vintage grain sack pillows.
The Average Price of Authentic Grain Sack Pillows
Authentic grain sack that has been transformed into pillows can average anywhere from $80 to $300 (sometimes more).
The great news is that I’ve curated a list of affordable grain sack pillows that can transition from season to season. They may not be the authentic grain sack, but they do the job for decorating!
I will say, if I ever do find an authentic pillow under $50, I’ll be the first in line.

Grain Sack Lumbar Pillows for Fall
Using different designs and patterns with your lumbar pillows mixed into your regular sofa pillows is a great way to invite new textures for the space. While the standard square shape will ALWAYS be a classic, introducing a lumbar pillow (and other shapes) could add more visual appeal to your space.
If you have no idea what a lumbar pillow is, it’s basically long and lean in shape. Their name is derived from they offer in the lower back. If we’re being honest here, it really is used to help with how the space looks. I rarely have used the lumbar pillow for back support. The standard size for a lumbar pillow is 14″ x 22″.
When you buy your grain sack lumbar piece, you should know that this piece will be the forefront of your “pillowscape”.
Typically, when you display the lumbar pillow, it is in front of other square pillows or it’s styled angled, while shown still in front. For example, you can use a lumbar pillow centered on your bed in front of two euro shams.
Tips Before Buying Grain Sack Pillows
- Make sure that the pillow you choose has a distressed look to it, as that will make it look more authentic.
- When you are purchasing your pillows, as you look at the price, determine if that includes an insert. Some of the pillows actually do not include the inserts!
- If you purchase on Etsy, make sure that it IS a pillow or pillow case. Sometimes, the sellers actually are selling the print and NOT the pillow.
- Some pillows have zipper enclosures while others have envelope enclosures with no zipper. If you have a preference, just make sure you double check!
You really didn’t need to know the history of grain sack pillows, but aren’t you glad you know the history now?
I love having pillows in my living room. Sure, the kids throw the pillows off of them every single day. Sometimes, they end up on the floor where they sit on them while the family is watching a movie.
I know there are some people who despise having way too many decorative pillows (e.g. my husband), but I absolutely love having the pillows. It brings me joy because I love karate chopping the middle of them to make them look well formed.
Decorating really doesn’t have to be expensive. I feel like as long as you know what style you love, you can acquire the design you love piece by piece.
I hope that this list of AFFORDABLE grain sack pillows for fall will help you in your journey to saving some money, and creating a living room and playroom you love just in time for fall!
