In March 2020, my husband came home and started talking about the potential for early retirement and about how he found it inspiring how others were able to do it. As he started talking about it, he mentioned that there were people sacrificing to try to live on $30,000 a year to then in early retirement live on only $30,000 a year.
Now, as the spender in the family, here was my response: “You want me to freaking live at poverty level now so I can live in poverty level later? We won’t even have the option to travel or anything. We would just wake up and the only benefit is that we don’t have to “work”? That’s an absolute NOOOOO.”
And, I was that dramatic.
As with all things, I’m a skeptic. I’m always weary that people are trying to take advantage of me. In this case, I thought my husband was trying to get me to live a lifestyle where he could buy a large piece of hunting property and in his ideal world, I would have dinner ready for him when he came home with his game. At this point, I’m beginning to think we literally were going to be living two different worlds in retirement.
And, after a night of cooling off from what I call a “heavy” conversation, I gave him the benefit of the doubt and researched more on what he termed the FIRE Budget. I found this close knit community of people who were fired up about this FIRE budget (no pun intended). FIRE is short for Financial Independence Retire Early. Some are just “Financial Independence” (FI).
After listening to ChooseFI Podcast 14 – Mr. 1500, I realized that Ryan wasn’t a good salesman. The whole goal behind FIRE is so that you get off the hamster wheel early so that you can earn time back to do WHAT YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT without the need to make money out of it. I’m probably not a good salesman either. So listen to that podcast yourself. It is quite incredible.
So, this section is dedicated to all things related to our FIRE budget and our plans for the future. We’re past the Dave Ramsey phase and know the basics. Choosing FIRE is all about maximizing your savings and making your money work for you and you work on things you LOVE. You are no longer trading time for money.
Our goal to FIRE is 2032.
