I can’t believe how fast these babes are growing up! Tear.
With Aubrey and Ansley moving to their new classes for Pre-Pre School and Pre-Kindergarten, this was a great time to introduce new apps to their beloved iPads to get them a heads up on their development for the school year.
And with that said, I’m going to start a weekly series I’m calling “App for Kids” where I’ll be sharing awesome app finds that I’ve discovered on my own or have been shared with me through other parents.
For this week, I’m sharing with you the Green Eggs and Ham – Read & Learn app.
- App Name: Green Eggs and Ham – Read & Learn
- Type: Digital Book App
- Platform: iOS Exclusive (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch with at least iOS 8).
- Price: $4.99
- In-App Purchases: No
- Ages: 3 to 6 years old
My thoughts as a parent and screenshots:
Although Ansley and Aubrey are only a year a part, you can tell how vastly different their literacy and reading comprehension skills are. For instance, Ansley knows how to spell and write her name. Aubrey can only spell at this point. The Green Eggs and Ham – Read & Learn app allows them both to interact and learn with it even with their different skill levels.
In full disclosure, my girls cannot sit through a full Dr. Seuss book when I read it to them. I am pretty sure their attention spans are fairly short because most Dr. Seuss book’s are over 20 pages long. However, with this app, I find that they love the learning activities embedded within this digital book all the while getting them to the END of the book.
One thing I dislike about some children’s apps are the in-store app purchases that are displayed inside of the app with “lock” icons. I find it kind of annoying that you PURCHASE an app, only to find out that it costs ADDITIONAL money to unlock other features. So then, you have a toddler constantly asking you “why isn’t this working” or “can you buy it?” The Green Eggs and Ham – Read & Learn doesn’t have that – which is a bonus! Kudos to the app makers!
Like I said previously, what I love about this app is that there are different learning activities for both of my girls even with their one year difference in literacy levels.
Ansley can practice her sight words …
and learn how to spell.
Aubrey can practice comprehension skills …
cognitive skills …
as well as learn phonics and rhyming.
And guess what? While I’m cooking dinner, the app can read the book to them:
Pretty neat. What’s even more awesome (this is optional by the way) is if you have an Apple TV, you can mirror the app so everyone can watch/read!
I know all of us parents are concerned about screen time. What’s great is this app allows parents to track the minutes being spent using it from both a monitoring perspective as well as statics on their development.
I love that the Green Eggs and Ham – Read & Learn app uses beautiful animation and interactions that entice kids into learning in a fun way, while also putting my parental mind at ease knowing that it was developed in collaboration with early literacy experts.
Ansley and Aubrey’s thoughts:
They love it! Especially because the book not only reads to them, but they can interact with different pages of the book.
Ansley’s favorite part: “I like that it reads to me.”
Aubrey’s favorite part: “I like the ham.” Only Aubrey 🙂
